Wow, such quick action! Once the only fiscally responsible commissioner was replaced by a Democrat, it took less than a month for the three La Plata County commissioners to start screaming for more tax revenue.
It was just last year property taxes were increased.
Then, because La Plate county is a tourist mecca, the county receives revenues equivalent to a much more populous county.
The county receives a total 3.9 percent tax on hotel/motel/resort room rates; 2 percent of the sales tax levied on residents and tourists; and 5 percent on food – the highest rate in the state where a plurality of counties don’t even have a tax on food. And could there be a more regressive tax?
So Durangutans, we know you choose to elect tax-waste-and-spend-more Democrats. And of course the city also is screaming for more taxes – a city with a tax base equivalent to a city at least twice its size – but please don’t punish us county residents by insisting on Democratic commissioners.
Commissioners: unlike the City Council, learn to budget and plan for the future!
