Local economy needs a modern airport

At one time, I led an organization with a worldwide footprint of aviation facilities. I have served on the board of directors of four airlines. As a United Airlines Global Services frequent flyer I use airports more than most people.

By any measure of merit, the Durango-La Plata County Airport and associated infrastructure is more indicative of a mid-20th Century Third World facility than one designed to attract air carriers and support a vibrant and diversified community. The current airport only functions as well as it does because of the extraordinary efforts and dedication of the city/county employees, employees of the airlines and the TSA personnel.

Driven by costs and personnel issues, the airline industry trend in supporting rural communities is to move to fewer flights per day on larger aircraft. However, they will only put these aircraft into airports where they can operate efficiently with minimum time on the ground, meaning airports with air bridges, automated luggage handling and sufficient ramp space to handle concurrent arrivals and departures. None of these things exist at our airport.

Our community is proud of it’s Western heritage and understands ranching, mining and the petroleum industry required roads, schools and transportation links to the outside world to build our current economy. Attracting new businesses and expanding tourist industry will be key to the future. A modern airport is an essential long-term investment for our community.

I urge you to vote “Yes” on Ballot Issue 1B. At the same time, I recognize the continuing need for improved roads and schools. Our family owns property in Durango, Bayfield and the county. We are sensitive to increasing taxes, however, La Plata County has the third lowest property tax rate in Colorado. This community can afford to support all three propositions on the ballot. I urge everyone to also vote “Yes” on Ballot Issues 1A and 3A.
