Local Humane Society holding Adopt-a-thon

The La Plata County Humane Society (LPCHS) will celebrate its 13th annual Adopt-a-thon today and tomorrow.

"We were able to adopt out 52 cats and dogs last year," says Jonell Jones, the marketing coordinator at the society. "We came a little short of our goal, but this year we're going to try to hit the 60 mark and hopefully we can find some great homes for most of the homeless animals here."

The Adopt-a-thon takes place at the Humane Society, and the goal is to adopt out as many animals as they can within a two-day period. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both days and the Thrift Store will be open during those times as well. Adult animals will have reduced adoption fees; adult cats will be $10 and adult dogs will be $50. A concession stand will sell burgers, brats, hot dogs, drinks and snow cones. Burgers and brats were donated by Sunnyside Farms Market. Coke products were donated by Coca-Cola in Durango.

Prizes for the adopters at the end of the Adopt-a-thon include an iPad Air from Connecting Point, as well as free pet portraits by Dinah Swan.
