Local law enforcement changes fingerprinting guidelines

Third parties will now be allowed to provide the service

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and Durango Police Department will no longer offer fingerprinting services for anything other than concealed weapons permits and court-ordered fingerprints.

Local law enforcement made the decision after a state bill passed that allows third parties to capture fingerprints rather than requiring individuals go to a state-sponsored fingerprinting agency such as a sheriff’s office.

The bill passed by the state Senate gives third parties the authority to collect fingerprints for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The two parties that have been given permission to take fingerprints for CBI do not have offices in Durango or La Plata County.
