Talk to a commissioner on Sept. 4 in Bayfield
County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will hold office hours at the Pine River Library in Bayfield on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon. Area residents are invited to come discuss their interests or concerns.
Westendorff said she appreciated visiting with people at her first such session in August. She plans to do this in Bayfield each month. For information call 382-6219.
Free CPR classes available
If your group would like to learn CPR and do not require a certification, Heart Safe La Plata is offering free CPR classes. With a 22-minute video produced by the American Heart Association and portable "manikins," instructors can show group members how to do CPR. The new training method targets youth groups, schools, parent-teacher organizations, churches, workplace wellness groups, lunch-and-learn, and civic groups. Heritage Day vendor sign-ups are now open
Sept. 2 is the deadline for discounted early sign-ups for vendor spaces for the 15th annual Bayfield Heritage Day and Sheep Trailing on Sept. 27. Food and arts and crafts vendors, demonstrations, live music, dog herding demonstrations, and other activities will take place in Joe Stephenson Park after the Boy Scouts 5K fun run/ walk, the sheep trailing and parade.
Vendor registrations paid by Sept. 2 are $35. After that they are $40. Space is free for craft demonstrators or civic groups providing information but not selling anything or charging to participate. Food vendors must have Health Department certification.
Vendor and parade sign-up forms can be downloaded from www.bayfieldheritagedays.org. For information call Melanie or Carole at 884-2331. There is no charge to be in the parade, but advance registration is required. Community groups are invited to host activities in the park.
The event is organized jointly by the Bayfield Lions Club, Pine River Centennial Rotary Club, Pine River Heritage Society, and interested individuals.
The Heritage Day Kick-off concert by the Bar-D Wranglers will be Friday evening, Sept. 26, a fundraiser for the Heritage Society. Tickets go on sale in September.
Church holding pig roast Sept. 6
Allison Community Church will have its second annual pig roast from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The menu includes roast pig, potato salad, coleslaw, dinner rolls, baked beans, homemade cobbler with ice cream, iced tea, lemonade and coffee. Meals for adults are $10, $4 for children six to 10, and free for kids under six.
Center of Southwest Studies to host documentary screening
The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a special screening of "Time Team America, Lost Pueblo Village" at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 in the center's lyceum classroom.
"Time Team America" is a prime-time television series on PBS, and a platform for the public to learn about archaeology and explore some of the most important research taking place at sites around the United States. Time Team came to Colorado to explore a defining moment in Pueblo Indian culture: the transition from hunting and gathering to an agricultural way of life. Time Team's crew joins forces with Crow Canyon Archaeological Center's staff to help unearth an ancient village at the Dillard site.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking at Fort Lewis College is free after 5 p.m.
The Center of Southwest Studies celebrates its 50th year in 2014. Some services closed in Ignacio this weekend
Ignacio Community Library will be closed tomorrow and Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day weekend. Roadrunner also will not be running its local bus services in Ignacio, Bayfield and Durango.
Optimal Health Day to be celebrated Thursday
Local coaches from Take Shape for Life will celebrate Discover Your Optimal Health Day from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 at Fox Fire Farms southeast of Ignacio. Participants are asked to wear walking shoes and bring a water bottle as they walk around the farm's vineyard and see the animals.
