Bar D Wrangler tickets on sale for Heritage Days

The Pine River Valley Heritage Society will host its annual Heritage Days kickoff dinner and show on Friday, Sept. 26 at the old Bayfield Middle School on South Street in downtown Bayfield. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and supper is at 6:30. This year's menu is beef brisket, and tickets for adults are $20. Dinner for children under 12 costs $10. Tickets are on sale at Pine River Valley Bank, First National Bank of Durango and Bayfield, Southwest Ag, and at the Heritage Society museum at 11 Mill St. Because the shows usually sell out, advance purchase of tickets is recommended.

Benefit concert for Durango cancer patient set for Sept. 12

Friends of Cheryl Birchard are organizing a benefit concert to help pay for cancer treatment expenses. The event is at 7 p.m. at Friday, Sept. 12 at St. Mark's Church, 910 E. Third Ave. in Durango.

The concert will feature Cheryl and Tim Birchard, Dances of Universal Peace, Gemma Kavanagh, the Vivace Mandolin Ensemble, Rochelle Mann, Linda Mack Berven and C. Scott Hagler.

Ignacio library hosting writers group

"Tweak & Critique Writer's Group" will meet at 10 a.m. Sept. 13 at Ignacio Community Library and continue on the second Saturday of the month. The workshop is for writers 12 and up. Writers can bring what they're currently working on, share it with fellow writers if they want to, hear what others are writing, and participate in writing activities and discussions with other writers. More information is at 563-9287.

FFA holding Rocky Mountain oyster fry

Ignacio FFA Booster Club will host the annual Rocky Mountain oyster and catfish dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. The dinner will be in the Ag Greenhouse, next to the Ag Shop at the old high school. Dinner is $15 for adults, $10 for children 10 and under, and includes Rocky Mountain oysters, catfish, coleslaw, beans, rolls, desserts and lemonade. The IHS football team play at 7 p.m. against Pagosa Springs.

Library hosting moon observation

Ignacio Community Library will host International Observe the Moon Night at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Area reunion to be held at Allison Grange Hall

The Allison, Arboles and Tiffany reunion will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Allison Grange Hall. Paper goods and drinks will be furnished, folks should bring a potluck dish to share. The reunion is a chance for residents past and present to gather with friends and family.

Cooking class starts Wednesday

"Cooking Matters: Garden to Table" is a six-session course starting Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pine River Public Library. Participants will learn how to prepare locally grown food for healthy, low-cost meals. The last session is from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Bayfield Farmers Market. Class members will use the library's learning garden and outdoor kitchen, enjoy a meal every Wednesday, take home groceries, and learn from culinary and nutrition educators. Free childcare is provided. The class is limited and participants have to attend all six sessions. Sign up by calling the Bayfield Family Center at 884-4747, or the library at 884-2222, ext. 513.

Paperback Picnics to start at Bayfield library

The Pine River Library is hosting a parent/child book club, with the first book discussion set for September.

The "Paperback Picnic" program is geared for kids in grades 3-8 and their caregivers. Participants will read the book together in preparation for each discussion. The first book for this program is "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. The inspiring story revolves around a young boy with facial deformities. Copies of the book are available at the library.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, starting at noon, participants will meet to talk about the book while having a picnic. Participants need to bring their own lunches, but drinks will be provided.

Wine and Music Fest tomorrow in Durango

Alternative Horizons will host its popular Wine and Music Fest from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. All proceeds benefit Alternative Horizons, providing resources, services and alternatives to victims and survivors of domestic violence. The event will be held at the Powerhouse Science Center, formerly the Durango Discovery Museum. The event features a wine tasting sponsored by The Wine Merchant, a silent auction, live jazz by Actual Proof, and hors d'oeuvres by Norton's Catering.
