First National Bank in Bayfield is holding its client appreciation day today from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Employees will be serving ice cream with all sorts of toppings. The bank is located at 351 Bayfield Center Drive.
Customer Appreciation Day is Saturday at Lewis True Value Mercantile
Lewis True Value in Bayfield will hold its annual bucket day sale tomorrow, with 25 percent off most regular priced items if you can fit them into a five gallon plastic bucket. There is a loose interpretation of what constitutes fitting into the bucket, but a few restrictions do apply.
There will be door prizes, free popcorn, kids' bouncy house, balloons, BHS cheerleaders fundraiser with hot dogs, soda, and chips, and a live radio remote. The store is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Yard waste collection closing for two weeks
The county yard waste collection site at the Bayfield Convenience Center on County Road 223 will be closed from Aug. 18 through Sept. 1 so that accumulated waste can be mulched. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 2, this mulch will be available free to residents on a load your own basis.
Once yard waste collection resumes, eligible items are dry, brown yard waste such as tree trimmings, slash, and tree trunks up to 8 inch diameter. Grass clippings and other green wastes are not accepted due to Colorado Department of Health restrictions. Green waste can be put in convenience center regular trash dumpsters for the regular $9 per cubic yard fee.
The center also accepts recycling with no charge - newspapers, aluminum, tin cans flattened at the open end, green, brown or clear glass separated by color and with lids removed, and car batteries. Convenience center summer hours are Mondays 1 to 6 p.m.; Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Saturdays 1 to 6 p.m. Winter hours are the same except closing at 5 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. For more information, call 382-6200.
Local church offers free clothes for back-to-school
Faith Community Church of the Nazarene has an on-going clothing ministry called "Twice Blessed Clothing" which provides clothes for anyone in need, no questions asked.
"Around this time, people really need school clothes, and we have plenty to share," said Twice Blessed director, Bea Foster. "We have clothes for kids of all sizes."
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, the church will have racks of clothes for people to choose from. The church is located about a mile south of Elmore's Corner on Highway 172.
Youth football officials needed

Ignacio library hosting events this week

The evening book club will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21. The ICL evening book club meets the third Thursday of every month reading a new book in a wide variety of genres. This month the book will be James Galvin's The Meadow. A meet-the-artist reception is at 5:30 p.m. next Monday, Aug. 25, honoring this summer's exhibiting artists.
Community lunch to culminate radon program
4CORE and the CSU Extension Office have conducted an ongoing effort to increase community awareness of residential indoor air pollution and radon.
Radon, a radioactive naturally occurring gas, exists at high levels in La Plata County and is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. A simple test will tell you whether or not your home is at risk. Other indoor air pollutants like carbon monoxide, dust mites, mold and household chemicals can be resolved fairly easily if you know what to do. Working together, these organizations have reached over 400 La Plata County residents and provided 24 free community workshops to provide radon education and test kits.
The programs will culminate with a celebration from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Lunch will be provided.
Navajo State Park celebrating 50th anniversary
This year marks the 50th anniversary of southwest Colorado's Navajo State Park, and the public is invited to visit the park on Aug. 23 for activities and programs to commemorate the opening. A special ceremony will be held at noon.
Anyone who participated in the construction or planning of the Navajo dam project or the park is asked to send an e-mail to Janet Clawson, park naturalist, who is collecting historical information. She also would like to hear from people who lived in the area at the time and remember development of the project, and from long-time visitors to the park. The park facilities opened in 1964, two years after completion of Navajo dam in New Mexico by the federal Bureau of Reclamation. The dam, built on the San Juan River, backed the water up 35 miles into Colorado. The reservoir's surface totals 15,600 acres, with about 3,000 acres on the Colorado side.
Navajo Reservoir provides the principal storage for the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project, which sends water to 110,000 acres of agricultural land on the Navajo Reservation.
Navajo State Park is a major recreational facility in southwest Colorado, drawing more than 300,000 visitors every year. The 2,100-acre park offers boating, fishing, trails, wildlife viewing, 138 camp sites, and three cabins. On Aug. 23, all items in the visitors' center bookstore will be discounted 15 percent.
Entry to the park costs $7 per vehicle; an annual pass costs $70.

Living wage group to hold picnic Sunday
La Plata County Thrive! Living Wage Coalition will host a picnic Sunday for people making less than a "living wage" in their jobs. The picnic will be from noon to 5 p.m. at Fassbender Park, W. 17th St. and Main Ave. in Durango.
There will be free food, games, and conversation. Bring lawn games and chairs.
The coalition lists a living wage in La Plata County as $12.40 for an individual, $25.50 for an adult with one child, and $36.82 for a family of four.

Bayfield Chamber After Hours is this evening
The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce monthly Business After Hours is today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fox Fire Farm southeast of Ignacio on CR 321. Appetizers will be provided. Wine and other drinks will be available. Also tonight, local band The Assortment will be playing from 6 to 9 p.m. as part of Fox Fire's Friday entertainment schedule during the summer.
Tonight's gathering is a departure from the Bayfield Chamber's normal Business After Hours on the second Thursday each month at a sponsoring Bayfield area business. Next month's meeting is Thursday, Sept. 11. For information call Melanie at 884-2331.
