Deadline is today for Heritage Days vendors, 5K pre-registrations

Vendors who want to participate in Bayfield Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 27, need to return their forms today.

Spaces are $20 for a 10x10 area, or $35 for a 20x10 area. Checks should be made out to Bayfield Heritage Days.

Vendor forms should be returned to Melanie Mazur, c/o Pine River Times, PO Box 830 in Bayfield, dropped off at the Pine River Times office, or emailed to prt@pinerivertimes.com. Applications are online at www.bayfieldheritagedays.org. Groups passing out information or giveaway items do not need to pay the fee as long as they aren't selling anything, but they are still asked to register by today.

For more information, contact Melanie at 884-2331. Parade entry forms also are available on the website. There is no charge for parade entries. The parade is at 10 a.m. or so, after the sheep trailing on the Buck Highway.

Today is also the pre-registration deadline for the 5K fun run and walk sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 506. Entries are $15 each or $30 for a family. Race day and late registration is $20 per person. Forms are available at local businesses and should be mailed to PO Box 259 in Bayfield.

Stroke and osteoporosis screenings taking place Monday

Life Line Screening will hold screenings for strokes, bone fractures and other medical conditions on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Pine River Senior Center at 111 South West Street in Bayfield.

Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women.

County to discuss driveway standards at Sept. 17 meeting

The La Plata County Public Works Department will hold a public meeting Wednesday on proposed driveway standards. The public meeting will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse Anasazi Room.

The county is seeking public participation to develop the standards for unincorporated parts of the county. The county, fire districts, and the public have been discussing driveway standards for the past decade after code deficiencies became apparent, mostly during the Missionary Ridge fire in 2002.

The county commissioners recently directed staff to present new driveway standards to the County Planning Commission to be incorporated into the county land use code. The current goal is to present a revised draft to planning commissioners in October.

School district offers free, reduced meals

Bayfield School District offers free and reduced-priced breakfast and lunch for families who qualify. For a family of four, an annual income up to $31,005 qualifies for free lunch for children in the district, while up to $44,123 qualifies for reduced-price meals.

Home needed in Bayfield for exchange student

Shelley Aveis, a local exchange student coordinator, has a foreign exchange student from Spain currently living with a welcome family and attending Bayfield High School. She needs a permanent family willing to open their hearts and home to her. Ines loves swimming, tennis, basketball, photography and theatre. BHS club hosting Wolverine Dash 5K

The Bayfield High Friends of Rachel Club will host a color dash 5K at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Registration is $15 by Oct. 1 and $20 the day of the race. Participants should wear a white T-shirt, which will get doused in color powder during the race.

Registration forms are available at the high school.

Writers workshop next weekend

The Southwest Christian Writers Association will hold its fifth annual conference Sept. 19-20 at Vectra Bank in Durango.

Two Bayfield residents, Barbara Kugle and Paula Wray, will present a session on Saturday. The keynote speaker is Beth K. Vogt.

Cattlemen to discuss endangered species listing for jumping mouse

The La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen will host an informational meeting on the New Mexico jumping mouse at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The meeting will be in the Animas Room at the Extension Building.  Michael Thabault, assistant regional director of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, will speak.  The New Mexico jumping mouse was recently listed as endangered, and areas of La Plata and Archuleta Counties are being considered as critical habitat. It will be interesting to learn exactly what this means and how it will affect agriculture when an area is named as critical habitat. For more information, call 247-2816.

Evening Book Club to meet at Ignacio library

Ignacio Community Library will host its Evening Book Club at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. The club meets the third Thursday of every month.

This month's book will be "The White Queen" by Philippa Gregory.

4Core hosting documentary screenings

The Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency will show two screenings of the Switch Energy Project, an award-winning documentary aimed at providing a glimpse of our future energy use and sources.  The film will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Smiley Building Theater and at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, in Noble Hall Room 130 at Fort Lewis College. Film festival will honor Wilderness Act

PAGOSA SPRINGS - The San Juan National Forest Pagosa District is partnering with the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership to offer a free mini-film festival at the Liberty Theater on Saturday, Sept. 13, to celebrate the Wilderness Act's 50th anniversary.  

 "The Meaning of Wild" documents the adventures of a wildlife cameraman in some of Alaska's most pristine wilderness. The film has won over 20 awards at various film festivals since its 2013 debut.

"Wild by Law: the Rise of Environmentalism and the Creation of the Wilderness Act" received an Academy Award nomination in 1991. "A Sense of Wonder," a 2008 documentary about Rachel Carson, depicts her reflections in the last year of her life. Carson wrote the 1960s classic, Silent Spring.

The Colorado Environmental Film Festival has contributed nine award-winning short films for the event. Films begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude about 4:30 p.m. There is no charge, so the public is invited to join the mini film fest at any point in the following approximate schedule:
