Local pentathlete wins a prestigious bronze

Seamus Millet takes third in the combined at youth championships in Cuba

Durango youth Seamus Millet made the best of his time in Cuba for the 2013 North, Central America and Caribbean Pentathlon Youth Championships.

Millet, son of James Millet and Jennifer Thurston, captured a bronze medal in the Youth C mixed relay competition Sunday with Centennial’s Jordan McCurdy.

Millet completed the combined – a 1,600-meter run broken into two 800-meter sections by two sessions at the shooting range – in 4 minutes, 51 seconds.

The pair helped earn their medal status by winning 28 of 30 fencing matches, with both boys capturing 14 wins, second best among Youth C fencing.

Saturday, Millet held his own in both the fencing and combined events. He won 23 fencing matches of the 32 he competed in and won the fencing ladder competition as well.

In the combined, Millet passed two Cubans in the last 200 meters to carve out a fourth-place overall finish in Youth C.

“I’ve never been out of the country before. It was cool to experience a different culture, but it made you appreciate what we have (in America),” Millet said Tuesday in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “It was nice to compete against international competition and find out how others train.”
