The leaves are changing and that means fall sports teams are getting closer to the halfway point of their seasons.
Locals teams have had varying levels of success so far this season. Teams like Durango High School football, Fort Lewis College men’s soccer and Durango High School boys golf are at either ranked at the top of the state or Division II. Other teams like FLC women’s soccer, Durango High School boys soccer, Bayfield High School boys soccer and Durango High School softball have been around average so far. Then, there are teams like Ignacio High School football and Durango High School volleyball that have struggled this season.
Luckily for all the local teams, league or conference play is starting up. Most teams have more than half their games remaining, with the league or conference play either starting soon or already underway. These are the most important games of the regular season, as they can help a team get a good seed in a conference tournament and help wipe away a poor non-conference or non-league schedule.
Most local teams are on the road this week. Here’s the local sports schedule for the upcoming week:
Thursday: Women’s soccer at University of Colorado Colorado Springs at 5 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks women’s soccer team suffered their first two losses of the season at the end of last week. FLC went on the road and lost to defending national champion and Division II’s No. 2 team, Cal Poly Pomona, 3-1 on Thursday. The Skyhawks then lost 1-0 to the 2024 national champion, Point Loma Nazarene, on Saturday. Those losses dropped FLC’s record to 3-2-1 overall.
UCCS is ranked No. 13 in Division II at 4-1-1 overall. Thursday’s game is both teams’ Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener. Last season, UCCS beat FLC 1-0 in Colorado Springs.
Men’s soccer at UCCS at 7:30 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks are still undefeated after a dominant 8-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday evening. FLC scored six first-half goals and eight players had a point for the Skyhawks. The incredible victory pushed FLC’s record to 3-0-2 overall.
UCCS is 1-2-3 overall. Last season, FLC beat UCCS 3-1 in the regular season and 4-2 in the NCAA tournament.
Friday: Volleyball at Chadron State at 6 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks’ six-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday with a 3-2 loss at home against South Dakota Mines. FLC led 2-1 before dropping the final two sets by at least five points. The loss dropped the Skyhawks to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC.
Chadron State is 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC. Last season, FLC beat Chadron State 3-0 at home.
Saturday: Football at South Dakota Mines at 2 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks dropped their RMAC home opener on Saturday, 25-19 to Black Hills State. It was mostly a defensive battle, with the teams combining for less than 600 yards of offense and three turnovers. The loss dropped the Skyhawks to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.
South Dakota Mines is 0-4 overall and 0-2 in RMAC play. Only one of the Hardrockers’ losses has been a one-score game.
