The temperature in Durango is dropping at the perfect time as the majority of fall sports have wrapped up with local sports fans moving indoors to catch all of their favorite winter teams.
However, all fall sports aren’t done as Durango High School football is still in the postseason with tough a game ahead.
The high school winter schedule officially opens this week with Durango High School hockey beginning its season with a tournament in Crested Butte. FLC’s basketball teams get deeper in their nonconference schedules.
There are plenty of opportunities for fans to catch local teams at home this week. Here’s the local sports schedule for the upcoming week:
Friday: Men’s basketball vs. Western New Mexico University at 7 p.m.
Notes: FLC has come from behind in both of its wins to start the season 2-0. One of those wins was against Western New Mexico on Saturday.
The Skyhawks escaped New Mexico with an 85-82 win. Western New Mexico shot 47% from the field and 41% from 3-point range in the loss while FLC shot 46% from the field and from 3-point range. Junior guard Yorgio Golesis led the Skyhawks with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Skyhawks crushed the Mustangs on the boards, 45-29.
Saturday: Women’s cross country national championships at 11 a.m. in Kenosha, Wisconsin
Notes: The Skyhawks women’s cross country team made it to the national championships for the third consecutive year. Senior Hannah Hartwell looks to finish her esteemed FLC cross country career with a strong result after she finished fifth at last year’s national championships.

Women’s basketball at Angelo State University at 2 p.m.
Notes: The Skyhawks are 3-0 overall after their 78-67 win at home against St. Edward’s University on Tuesday. FLC has had three different leading scorers in its first three games and is averaging 85 points per game.
Angelo State is 1-2 overall after three games against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents this season. The latest game was a 65-49 loss at Western Colorado on Monday. The Rams finished last season 18-12 overall and 13-9 in the Lone Star Conference.

Thursday: Durango boys hockey against Colorado Academy in Crested Butte tournament at 7:15 p.m.
Friday: Durango boys hockey against Cheyenne Mountain in Crested Butte tournament at 11 a.m.
Saturday: Durango boys hockey against Stanley Lake in Crested Butte tournament at 10:45 a.m.
Durango football vs. Heritage in 4A state quarterfinals at noon.
