Local swimmers pull double duty in Grand Junction

Three members of Durango High School’s varsity girls swimming team joined the Durango Swim Club on Jan. 17-19 in Grand Junction for a six-team club meat.

The swim club placed fifth out of six teams but managed a host of strong individual performances.

Elli Earl, 15, took fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke and fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke after dealing with an illness for most of the meet.

Claire Larson, 14, finished 11th in the 200-yard freestyle and swam personal-best times in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.

Anne Mummery, 15, finished third in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races and came in eighth place in the 100-yard butterfly.

“She is a great leader and a good role model, working hard consistently because she can see her goals,” DSC head coach Suzanne Schieltz said in an email to The Durango Herald.

Josh Miller, 17, finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, sixth in the 100-yard backstroke and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Haley Benjamin, 13, stood out among the DSC-exclusive members with a first-place finish in the 400-yard IM and took second in the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard IM.

Steevie Delio, 13, came in third place in the 100-yard butterfly and ninth place in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM.

“Steevie puts work day in and day out and is always thinking of how she can get better,” Schieltz said. “It showed this weekend.”

Joci Earl – Elli’s 13-year-old younger sister – took fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle and qualified for the Colorado Silver State Meet in that event. She also finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Sterling Gates, 13, came in fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
