Local track and field stars shine at Great Southwest Classic

Lanning, Scott, Urban impress in Albuquerque meet

Though the high school track and field season has long been over, two Durango High School athletes and another from Bayfield are still turning heads.

Abby Scott and Aiden Urban of represented Team Colorado and DHS at the Great Southwest Classic Saturday in Albuquerque. Jordan Lanning of Bayfield also competed.

Scott ran a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 16.79 seconds in the 800-meter run and finished in second place in a talent-loaded night race. The time would have been a school record if the meet was held in the state of Colorado, but Scott’s 2:17.26 mark still stands in the DHS record books.

“Abby’s placing and the way she ran has attracted quite a few suitors,” Durango High School head coach David McMillan wrote in an email to The Durango Herald. “The leading candidate is currently University of San Diego, but Abby will be visiting colleges back east in the coming weeks to see if there are others that suit her.”

Lanning was one of 22 girls to reach the final in the high jump, and she soared onto the podium. Lanning recorded a jump of 5-feet, 5-inches to take sixth place.

Urban competed in the 800-meter run and also may have worked his way onto a college team with his efforts. The recent DHS graduate finished 16th out of 23 elite competitors after a breakout season that was his first as a Demons track and field participant.

According to McMillan, Urban passed three or four kids in the final 100 meters of his race to post a time of 2:00.79.

“Aiden has been invited to run at Westminster College in Utah on a track scholarship,” McMillan said. “It’s been quite an exciting week for these two runners.”
