Ignacio and Bayfield kids from the La Plata County Independent Youth Performing Arts competed at the 15th annual Manzano Winterguard Invitational on March 26 in Albuquerque, placing in several categories of competition. The Cadets, ages 10 to 12, won their category of competition. The Juniors, ages 7 to 9, took third, edged out by only one-sixth of a point.
The Mini Cadets placed fourth in the young dance competition and were awarded the trophy for judges choice.
The Scholastic Guard group, made of high school students, won in the Independent category.
The duet of Abigail Katzer and Nykole Meshew medaled in the solo and ensemble divisions. "The girls (ages 10 and 12) self-choreographed their show and did very well competing against high school ensembles," wrote director Sharon Hunter. "I'm very proud of all the kiddos and instructors Tessa Harrmann, Caitlin Martinac amd Kiara Stacey."
The groups will perform their Spring Showcase recital at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22 at the Ignacio High School Performing Arts Center. LPCIYPA will perform their winterguard, ballet, hip hop and fairy tale dance routines. Contact Hunter at 903-4294 for more information or summer registration.
