Locals cruise in Moab half marathon

Durango community members and Demons’ cross country runners place well

Durangoans invaded the Moab Trail half marathon Saturday.

The race was divided by age groups, and United States National Trail Half-Marathon Championships were handed out in five-year increments for registered USA Track and Field Members over 20.

Durango High School cross country assistant coach Brett Wilson came in eighth place, while former DHS coach Parker Mildenhall came in ninth.

Current DHS cross country runners Nicholas Turco and Gordon Gianinny came in 10th and 11th place, respectively, and Shannon Maloney won the girls U19 Trail Championships race.

DHS cross country and track and field head coach David McMillan and his wife Heidi won national championships in their age groups.

“Not bad for a pair of old farts,” McMillan said in an email to The Durango Herald.

Other Durangoans placed will in the half-marathon, too.

Scott Simmons took 18th overall and second in the male 40-49 age group, Steve Fenster 26th overall and third in 40-49 and Cate Fenster 45th overall and second in the female 40-49 group.
