Drunken driving, trespassing, noise complaints and the usual reports of illegal fireworks kept police officers and sheriff’s deputies busy over the long holiday weekend.
Durango Police logged nearly 25 fireworks-related calls from Friday morning through early Tuesday, including an arrest at the 100 block of East College Drive and several verbal warnings. On Saturday evening, there was a report of someone shooting fireworks out the window of a vehicle near East Second Avenue and East 32nd Street.
Police had extra patrols around Durango parks and other popular hangouts, and warned several people about having open containers of alcohol in public places, according to the weekend blotter. There also were plenty of traffic stops and parking issues reported.
Outside of Durango, a Bayfield woman died Sunday in the Cascade Creek waterfalls. She has been identified as Haley Clarke, 19. Two other people were rescued from the falls during the incident, according to Ron Corkish, president of La Plata Search and Rescue.
On Monday, a Silverton woman was injured when a vehicle she was riding in went several hundred feet off County Road 110 in San Juan County. The woman, whose name was not released, was airlifted to a hospital.
The driver, whose name also was not released, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
San Juan County Sheriff Bruce Conrad said a black Dodge pickup went off the embankment about three miles north of Silverton. According to a Colorado State Patrol log, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m.
Conrad said three occupants were at the crash scene when authorities arrived, but officers suspect others fled. The driver and one passenger were not injured. A woman, a native of Silverton, was flown to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.
