Valentine’s Day. The day upon which we celebrate love, chocolates and the color red. For some, though, this is a lonely holiday, filled with disappointments from a bad date or the lack of one. Sometimes, the conversation is lacking or the sex is bad. Maybe the date wasn’t what you expected or they were still hung up on their ex. Whatever the reason, it can lead to a disappointing evening.
Fortunately, this outcome can be easily avoided by ditching your fallible Valentine and going on a date with a book. Here are four reasons why books make the best date on Valentine’s Day:
Books are cheap dates
Worried that going out on Valentine’s Day will break the bank? Most paperbacks run around $16, and for that $16, you can be whisked away to all kinds of exotic locations for hours on end. That romantic trip to the French Riviera, the Scottish Highlands or the Australian Outback is now at your fingertips and almost right for any budget, without the exhausting flights, the sometimes not-so-pleasant exotic food ( I personally am not fond of haggis) and the inevitable sunburn. You can also admire the locals without guilt or reproach.
Books are low maintenance
A book won’t get mad at you when you need to take a call from your mother in the middle of a date or if you need to take a break to see other books for a while. They understand that you have other things in your life and that you can’t be reading them all the time. They don’t need apologies or explanations for your absence, and are just as happy to be read when you return.
Books are better between the covers
Lets face it, sometimes the sex on Valentine’s Day can be a little lackluster. After all the build-up the week before, sometimes the pressure can lead to a less than ideal result. Books don’t let the excitement fizzle out, and for a steamy evening, they have something for your every mood. “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “One Good Earl Deserves a Lover,” “The Story of O,” “The Joy of Sex” ... need I go on? They are fantastic in the sheets (of paper).
Books have fantastic form
A straight, strong spine, a thick sheaf of paper, crisp to the touch and firm under hand, with chiseled edges. They are fantastic to look at and even better to touch.
So if you are looking for the perfect date this Valentine’s Day, pour yourself a glass of wine, light some candles and open up a book. It will be a night you will never forget in the sheets and between the covers. A book lover never goes to bed alone.
