Looking over your shoulder

The Animas River path is an added asset to Durango, enjoyed by many people of all ages and abilities. It’s a multiuse path for various activities, and with the growth of Durango, and the obvious increase in traffic on many streets in town, the path is a safer option to recreate and commute on from point A to B. Now even more, we all must be aware of our surroundings while using and enjoying the path with the heavy use.

After reading the letter in The Durango Herald on Sept. 4, regarding the safety on the river path, it’s fair to say there are incidents with speedy cyclists, and other wheeled toy users, trying to negotiate around pedestrians and dogs, causing a near collision or collision.

However, it’s not fair to throw blame on the Durango Police Department for lack of patrol and security on the path as stated in the letter. The “fancy fast four-wheeler” does cruise the path, along with the DPD bicycle patrol. With the growth of Durango, there’s an increase in calls that the DPD must respond to, both urgent and non-urgent 24/7.

Rather than blame the DPD, communicate with them and City Council respectfully.
