Looking to compete in American Ninja Warrior? Jungle Gym DGO has you covered

New gym offers an alternative workout to CrossFit and pumping iron

Durangoans who hope someday to compete in “American Ninja Warrior” now have a place to train with the opening of a new gym.

Jungle Gym, 151 E. 15th St., offers obstacle course training, group fitness classes and personal training for all ages.

“We wanted to build a place for people to train and have fun while working out,” said co-owner Alli Kardas.

“This is an alternative to CrossFit because there are enough of those gyms in town. That is not what we are into.”

She said the equipment, which includes warped walls, salmon ladders and a rig that resembles adult monkey bars, is intended to improve users’ functional fitness.

Functional fitness training improves compound movements used in everyday life, rather than focusing on one muscle group at a time.

A mutual love for Spartan Races, which are timed competitions that feature natural and constructed obstacles designed to test mind-body fitness, inspired Kardas and partner, Dan Rohde, to open the gym.

“We have everything you need to train for a Spartan Race, minus cardio equipment,” Kardas said.

The gym offers a variety of classes clients can participate in open gym. Kardas said classes can be adjusted, too.

“All trainers are prepared to modify any classes they create so that someone just starting gets a good workout and won’t be overwhelmed,” Kardas said.

Jungle Gym is open from 6:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
