The recent headline in the Herald, “Good Samaritan critically injured in chain-reaction crash west of Durango,” immediately caught my attention.
I was saddened and moved by the story of Lori Nightingale’s heroism, a selfless response that would lead to her death, as now reported by her family, when she returned to the scene of the crash to help those injured, perhaps even saving a life.
This was a supreme example of the Golden Rule in action, at a time when we ourselves are called upon in extreme circumstances to help our neighbors, friends and families. The Golden Rule should be the motto for all of our actions. Lori Nightingale should be honored and lauded.
I note on Facebook that a friend has established a GoFundMe site for her to help with final expenses (https://www.gofundme.com/f/6ddn4q-final-expenses). Another way to honor her legacy is to remember her when we are challenged to respond to the needs of others. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you – always, in honor of Lori and our obligation to create a better world for all.
