On Wednesday, the La Plata Electric Association board of directors is scheduled to approve rate increases for electricity users here in La Plata County. If the board proceeds with its proposed residential increase – 5.5 percent – then it will have raised our base charges 60 percent in the last five years! The residential base rate in comparable communities (Aztec, Farmington, Trinidad, Glenwood Springs, Fort Collins) is $3.50 to $8.50 a month; we’ll be at $21.50. Conversely, the large commercial energy rates (i.e., Home Depot, Walmart) are going down more than 14 percent. This is absurd. Please, join me in contacting LPEA before Wednesday to express your opinions. Send email to: contact-lpea@lpea.coop
