La Plata Electric Association is warning customers that someone is posing as an LPEA official who is threatening to cut off their electricity if they don’t settle a delinquent account immediately.
The caller is demanding a credit card number over the phone, LPEA spokeswoman Indiana Reed said Tuesday.
“This is a scam,” Reed said. “LPEA doesn’t operate that way. Do not give any information to anyone calling with this claim.”
As far as LPEA officials can determine, only businesses have been called by the impostor, Reed said.
Reed said the only intended victim she knows of is the China Cafe at 1525 Main Ave. A woman who answered the phone there said she would leave a message for the owners.
“We hear of these scams involving LPEA now and again,” Reed said. “We don’t conduct business in this fashion and the company doesn’t disconnect customers on holidays or weekends.”
Reed said LPEA was alerted to the scam by a company dispatcher who received a call from a business customer.
LPEA offices are closed Tuesday and Christmas. But anyone who wants to report a scam can call 247-5786 and stay on the line until a dispatcher answers.
