LPEA scam targets customers via email

The La Plata Electric Association is warning of yet another scam targeting customers but this time via email. The latest phishing attempt was Monday.

It’s unknown how many people have been affected thus far, said Indiana Reed, spokeswoman for LPEA.

“The emails come from an unknown Google Calendar notification and, similar to our monthly paperless billing alerts, say the customer’s bill is now available for viewing,” said Dennis Svanes, LPEA chief financial officer. “This is obviously a phishing attempt. Do not click on any of the links.”

Phishing is an attempt to scam people out of financial or personal information through fraudulent emails or other fraudulent Internet communications.

Official LPEA email notifications clearly indicate the origination of the email is LPEA, and include a reply to lpea.coop.

LPEA does not use Google Calendar for any paperless billing notifications.

Customers are advised not to click the links and to contact LPEA or law enforcement if they feel threatened, Reed said.

“While this isn’t a delinquent-bill notification, as have been previous scam attempts, it could possibly open our members who click on any of the links in the email to identity theft,” Svanes said.

If in doubt about a billing department phone call or email from LPEA or supposed authorized agent, customers are asked to contact the LPEA Customer Service Department, 247-5786, to clarify any billing questions.
