I want to applaud Sarah Ferrell for her insightful letter (“Transparency missing at electric board,” Nov. 22) shedding light on the troubling issues currently underway at the La Plata Electric Association.
Ms. Ferrell attends nearly every board meeting and always has a commonsense take on what transpires.
I am not able to make as many meetings as Sarah, but I was present during the September meeting in Pagosa, where Britt Bassett moved to edit the minutes. His exact words were: “People don’t need to know the details, only the outcome.”
He then went on to say the minutes are generalizations, and don’t contain actual quotes or details.
This is absolutely preposterous.
The superb staff of the LPEA do an excellent job of procuring highly detailed minutes, every single month.
Britt may have recused himself during the conversation surrounding his conflict of interest, but it was he who moved to edit the minutes.
I still cannot believe Jack Turner and other directors supported this action.
Sarah was also correct about Bassett seeking to profit from his position on the board. No wonder he is leading the charge to break the Tri-State contract so enthusiastically.
I’m all for a more renewable and local power source, I just want to see a responsible transition. I don’t believe the contract should be broken “no matter the cost” and I definitely don’t think one director should profit from it.
Keeping electric rates low should be the board’s primary concern, especially for those of us that can’t afford our power bills.
