The flyover is an efficient way to make sure lines in rugged or forested areas are up to code, so any necessary maintenance can be done before winter, LPEA officials say.
“Essentially we want to alert the community of the aerial inspection,” Justin Talbot, LPEA manager of operations, said in a news release. “We have such little air traffic around here, especially in the Animas Valley, that we know people do notice when something is out of the ordinary.”
The flight is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from the Animas Air Park. The helicopter will be flying low, following large transmission lines from Durango about 25 miles north through the Animas Valley to the county border near Cascade Village.
Crews will be on the look out for damaged lines and equipment, hazard trees and anything else in need of repair that might be susceptible to snow damage in the coming months.
