Lucas Robbins goes low for Durango golf at Bridges

Demons varsity golf up-and-down

A junior varsity player outdid his varsity teammates Wednesday at the Bridges Golf Club in Montrose.

Playing on the Jack Nicklaus designed, par-71 course, Robbins shot a 79 to lead the Demons’ varsity team.

Robbins has played as the fifth varsity player most of the season, but Durango High School head coach Kirk Rawles rewarded Blake Martin, a senior, with the final varsity spot Wednesday after he shot a career-best 79 Tuesday at the par-70 Black Canyon Golf Course.

“It was a great two days for Lucas this week,” Rawles said. “He shot 80 (Tuesday) and backed it up with a 79 on a tougher course (Wednesday).”

The Demons’ varsity shot 242 as a team. Grand Junction and Montrose tied for first at 223.

Martin shot an 86 on Wednesday. Varsity teammates Cameron Barnhardt, Cory Gillespie and Eric Walker all shot 81, and Cy Spicer led the team with an 80.

“It seemed like the guys each played nine good holes and nine not-so-good holes,” Rawles said. “If we could’ve got 18 good holes on that course, it would’ve been nice to see.”

Grand Junction’s Trevor Olkowski shot 68 to win the tournament.

Kobe Szura shot 82 for the Demons’ junior varsity. Robby Grogan finished with 86, Kyle Pritchard shot 90, and Caleb Newman added a 91.

The Demons will return home to host an event at 10 a.m. Monday at Dalton Ranch Golf Club. Fruita Monument, Grand Junction and Montrose will attend, among a slew of individuals from other teams. It will be a shotgun start.

“We are going to take (Thursday) off to get the guys caught up on homework, and then we will play out there Friday and Saturday to get ready,” Rawles said.
