Magpies Newsstand in Durango burglarized

Cash, merchandise taken Saturday

Both cash and merchandise were stolen Saturday evening from Magpies Newsstand Cafe in Durango, with no signs of forced entry.

The Durango Police Department has video footage of the suspect and recovered a small amount of physical evidence when officers examined the scene Sunday morning. In total, less than $200 in merchandise was taken. The owners, Denda and Jack Graves, also reported cash was taken from the cash register, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe with the Durango Police Department.

Shupe said the department does not disclose the amount of cash taken at burglaries because law enforcement uses that information during interviews with suspects.

The number of burglaries in November and December, somewhere from six to nine incidents, was about equal to reported burglaries during the same months in 2019. However, burglaries increased by about 35% for the entire year of 2020 compared with 2019, Shupe said.

“We just really want to remind people to call in any kind of suspicious activity they see and to make sure they are locking up their doors and their property as best they can,” Shupe said.
