I am concerned that Main Avenue is losing its character and ambiance with the closing of Francisco’s, Lost Dog and Steaming Bean. These dining/coffee options served a variety of needs for tourists and locals. Who doesn’t remember going to Francisco’s to celebrate with a crowd of family and friends? How many high school and college kids crammed for a test at The Bean? Then there was the really modern yet homey feel of the Lost Dog. How many kids returned to Durango over the years and planned to meet up with friends at the Lost Dog?
These are our institutions and our history. As these unique establishments are forced to close their doors because of rental constraints, we are losing our current history and charm. Rules and regulations that require a certain historic look do not protect these places from economic conditions that affect their viability. They do not preserve the memories that people create in these places. Respect our town’s traditions and history. Leave the veranda up at Francisco’s as a sign of that respect.
