Maintenance tip: Check your swamp coolers

Durango Fire Protection District Firefighters investigated reports of smoke at Durango Natural Foods on Tuesday morning. “A belt on the swamp cooler was smoking,” Fire Marshal Karola Hanks said. “Belts wear as they age, and this one was giving off that rubberized smell as well as smoke in the ventilation system.” Firefighters turned off the swamp cooler, and business returned to normal after about 20 minutes.
