After some early frustration, Jordan Alexander gave the Skyhawks a reason to cheer.
He scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute to give the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over league-leading Regis on Sunday at Dirks Field.
Luke Lawrence found Alexander on the end of a through ball, and Alexander slipped it left of the keeper.
“They defended well in the first half and did a really good job of keeping us out,” Alexander said. “But, as all Fort Lewis teams, if we keep pushing and pushing, we’re gonna break through.”
Regis (8-2-1, 7-2-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) goalie Connor Adkisson made 10 saves in the match, including a diving one at full stretch in the 15th minute.
His counterpart, Ryan Schaul, stopped six shots, but four of them came in the second half as the Skyhawks backed more into a defensive position to protect their lead.
Schaul snatched a chipped shot away from the top corner with 15 seconds left to preserve the win for FLC (8-5-1, 5-5 RMAC).
FLC outshot Regis 20-13 but only had six shots in the second half compared to 10 for the Rangers.
Regis was awarded four free kicks in the game’s final 15 minutes, but a combination of Schaul saves and the defensive wall kept Regis off the board.
“The defensive part is a team effort; it starts with (the forwards) and how hard they work,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said. “Really proud of how we defended from the front (Sunday).”
FLC captain Johannes Sander picked up his second yellow card of the match in the 86th minute, giving him a red card and earning him a suspension for the Skyhawks’ next match.
FLC had to return to Durango after a Friday game in Pueblo in order to play Regis.
“Really proud of the way we reset and got ourselves ready for the game (Sunday),” Kennedy said.
They play their next three games at home against three teams ranked above them in the RMAC standings. Colorado Mesa is up next at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
“It’s always important to make the home games count,” Kennedy said.
