Make those who sign pay for the election

A tax increase is a tax increase only when you do not like what the money will be spent upon.

This seems to be a common belief among a certain segment of La Plata County voters who have been persistent, and consistent, opponents of any tax increase for many years.

It has become clear that a tax increase for something these same voters support is just a very good expense made for the benefit of all the citizens of La Plata County.

I recently heard the La Plata County Clerk, Tiffany Lee Parker, estimate that there would be a $60,000 cost to the county for a recall election should a petition currently being circulated to remove Gwen Lachelt as a county commissioner gain the signatures of the required 7,500 voters.

The voters who would sign this petition for recall must think it is not such a big tax deal, forcing each La Plata County taxpayer to pick up the tab for this foolish errand.

Should this petition gain the 7,500 signatures it needs, I suggest that each person who signs be required to send the county clerk his or her share of the $60,000 cost, or about $8 for each signature on the petition.
