I read with interest the recent article on the Durango Mall revitalization proposal, anchored by Whole Foods (Herald, Dec. 10).
This is a fantastic, forward-thinking project for a mostly vacant mall. The reality is that many of the businesses that have left over the years will never return. This project, through demolition and new construction anchored by a AAA tenant, would turn an eyesore into a viable development. It thoughtfully addresses Durango’s desperate need for additional housing while adding substantial tax revenue.
Given all the positives, one would think this would be a no-brainer and a welcome asset to the community. Yet, based on the Herald article, evidently not. Once again, the Herald appears to champion what seems likely to be another losing cause.
I recall past examples – Walmart, Animas La Plata and the Herald’s doom-and-gloom forecasts for local retailers. Today, Kroegers, which was projected to fail with the arrival of Home Depot, has instead upped its game to compete in the evolving retail landscape. Others will adapt similarly.
