Man arrested after nine-hour standoff with law enforcement

Man accused of domestic violence; Residents in Haviland Lake area were told to shelter in place

A man suspected of domestic violence refused to give himself up to law enforcement for several hours early Tuesday in the Haviland Lake area north of Durango, according to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began late Monday or early Tuesday, when Christopher Futch, 48, became involved in a “disturbance,” according to a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

Residents in the 42000 block of U.S. Highway 550 were asked to shelter in place from about 2:45 to 9 a.m., according to the release issued at 2 p.m.

“The Sheriff’s Office requested residents to remain indoors with their home secured and to not answer the door,” the release said.

Futch, who was allegedly armed with a gun, is accused of making statements about harming law enforcement if they responded, according to the release.

The Sheriff’s Office sent a drone and “several deputies” to the scene, according to a spokesman for the agency.

Futch was placed into custody without incident at 11:53 a.m., about nine hours after the shelter-in-place was issued. He was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.
