Man fatally shot in southern La Plata County

Law enforcement in contact with suspected shooter

A man was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon south of Durango, according to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was identified Thursday by the La Plata County Coroner as Randall Moon, 53. No further information was immediately available about Moon, but he apparently lived in the area off La Posta Road (County Road 213) south of Durango.

The shooting was reported to law enforcement at 1:19 p.m. on Rancho Durango Road off La Posta Road in the High Flume Canyon area, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke.

Three people were in the house at the time of the shooting, including the victim, Burke said.

“Deputies are in contact with the shooter,” Burke said shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Sheriff’s Office has declined to release any other details, including whether any arrests have been made.

“This case is early in its investigation and ongoing,” a news release said. “There is no additional information available at this time. … There is no threat to the public or local residents.”
