Man hit by truck was in crosswalk, police say

However, there was no activation of its lights

The man who survived being struck by a semitrailer after stepping into traffic Friday night is now believed to have been within the crosswalk and not out of it, according to Durango Police spokeswoman Rita Warfield.

Kenneth Baker, 24, of Durango was hit by a United Parcel Service semitrailer on Camino del Rio at about 8:10 p.m. Friday night and suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung.

“Our initial impression was that he was not in the crosswalk,” Warfield said, “but I spoke with an officer in more detail, and it is believed that he may have been in the crosswalk.

She said Baker did not activate the pedestrian crosswalk lights to signal to oncoming traffic he was waiting to cross.

“He did step out in front of traffic, and no one saw him in enough time to stop,” she said.

Baker was admitted to Mercy Regional Medical Center and listed in fair condition.
