HOBBS, N.M. – A southeastern New Mexico man who reportedly said he wanted to prove himself to a Mexican drug cartel when he allegedly shot and killed another man is heading to trial.
Anthony Breeding is scheduled to face a jury trial beginning October 26 in connection with the death of Jose Angel Rivera, the Hobbs News-Sun reports.
Deputies discovered Rivera lying underneath a carport in a pool of blood from an apparent gunshot wound to the head in December. Breeding, 35, was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated burglary.
A criminal complaint says Breeding told officers he received a call from the “cartel” to go to Rivera’s home and steal belongings as payment.
He has pleaded not guilty.
No other arrests have been made and the investigation is still open, said Lea County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Vivian Martinez.
