Man stabbed Saturday outside Joel’s Bar in Durango

Durango man arrested on second-degree assault

A 21-year-old Durango man was arrested after a nonlife-threatening stabbing in the west 100 block of Eighth Street on Saturday outside of Joel’s Bar.

Harrison Charles Hill was charged with second-degree assault after fighting with an acquaintance, Garrett Gilley, also of Durango, about 9:30 p.m., said Durango Police Department Cmdr. Jacob Dunlap.

“The two knew each other and had been fighting, but they had separated and were on their separate ways when officers made contact with them,” Dunlap said.

It is unclear whether the stabbing occurred during the fight, Dunlap said. Gilley initially was unaware he had been stabbed. Only after a second officer spoke with Gilley did Gilley and the officer realize he had been stabbed.

Gilley declined to be transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, and Dunlap said officers believed he planned to be taken to the hospital by friends or family. Dunlap said the stab wound was described as a cut by one of the officers.

Hill initially gave officers a false name. He was cited for criminal impersonation and violation of a protection order that banned the consumption of alcohol.

Gilley was cited for disorderly conduct.
