AVON – A man was hospitalized after being shot by police in the parking lot of a store in a Colorado mountain town Thursday night.
The shooting happened soon after state troopers and local officers attempted to make contact with the driver of a vehicle on eastbound Interstate 70 that they pulled over near the Avon exit, the Colorado State Patrol said. The patrol did not release details about the man’s condition or the shooting but said no law enforcement officers were hurt.
The Vail Daily, which spoke with a witness, reported a passenger in the vehicle was shot in the parking lot of a Walgreens after pointing a gun at one of the officers after waving it around.
Christopher Dehart, who was headed into the store to get a money order, told the newspaper that a passenger in the truck had a gun pointed at himself and the other person in the truck and then got out of the truck and waved his gun around. He said officers patiently told the passenger to put the gun down, but the driver of the truck got out and told the passenger not to believe the police.
The truck pulled into the parking lot after being contacted by law enforcement because it was the first place that could accommodate a truck pulling a car trailer, deputy town manager Preston Neill said.
