Last month, I got to witness Mayor Marbury at work. The occasion was a welcome luncheon for Shailen Bhatt, the new director of the Colorado Department of Transportation. Like everyone else, Sweetie welcomed him and thanked him for coming.
Then she performed the most amazing act of local advocacy I have seen in public for a long time. She told the story of a medical emergency of her grandchild and connected it to the functionality of our roadways leading to the ER. She was powerful, vulnerable and connected to the very real emotions which are present when the travel time to the ER is of the essence.
For Sweetie, it’s not just “government spending.” Rather, it’s how we make Durango safe, secure and livable as we grow. Sweetie is all about that work, and that’s why I am voting to re-elect her to the City Council.
I am also voting for Dick White to be re-elected. I want my elected leaders to commit our local governments to increased energy efficiency and to participate in efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change and threaten the well-being of my children and grandchildren. I also want elected leaders to be open individuals who listen to all sides and take in opposing viewpoints without invalidating them.
Dick does both of those things and so earns my vote.
