Durango voters have an opportunity to continue with great leadership on our City Council. Sweetie Marbury and Dick White, two accomplished and dedicated public servants, are offering to continue their able service on the Durango City Council. These two councilors have a record of exemplary service.
I have known Sweetie for several years and became well-aware of her concern for Durango citizens during the eight years I served on the council. She attended most council meetings and always had something thoughtful to add during the public-participation portion of the meetings. Her goal has been continually to make Durango a better place to live. She has succeeded. Even a cursory observation of her performance as a councilor and mayor discloses she is independent, thoroughly informed and approachable while remaining very careful with taxpayers’ money. We should be grateful for her service and are fortunate for her willingness to continue.
Similarly, Dick White has also given citizens full measure. He is very intelligent, objective and has a long-term view of Durango as a healthy, vibrant, prosperous community. Some detractors, ill-informed as they are, take issue with his position on our natural environment, but I see him as a thoughtful trustworthy steward of our place. At the same time, he is always respectful, and carefully considers others’ viewpoints in his decisions. He recognizes that the solutions to problems facing the city are complex and require substantial analysis and decisive action. He has served us well.
We voters must be very careful of those who, from their armchair perspective, seem to have a lot of answers when they should be trying to figure out the questions. We should vote for our best interests and return Sweetie and Dick to office.
