We are highly suspect of many politicians’ motives and ethics. That is the antithesis of our opinion of Sweetie Marbury.
We first met Sweetie when Suzanne was the chairperson of the Durango Heritage Celebration. Sweetie enthusiastically volunteered her time to help with that downtown event, including portraying several different Durango pioneers and a “lady of the night” in our annual cemetery tour. For us, her honest and forthright interest in supporting this nonprofit event was the first of many examples we have seen of her genuine caring attitude about our community.
This is a woman who not only puts her heart and soul into the welfare of Durango, but also her mind. Never one to jump to conclusions, Sweetie diligently researches the issues on which she must make decisions and is true to herself in making those decisions. She is not one to bow to pressure and does not shirk from unpopular positions when the situation requires stepping up. She does not put on a public face in her role on the City Council and, this year, as mayor. She is the genuine article at all times. We cannot imagine a public servant more committed to her responsibilities on the council.
Sweetie and the other councilors, as well as the city manager, cannot always please every single constituent. That is a fact of life that comes with the positions those individuals hold. Sweetie’s opinions have differed from ours on certain issues, but we have always been assured that her stance was based on sound research and a firm commitment to the good of Durango.
For these reasons, we wholeheartedly support Sweetie Marbury in her bid for re-election to the Durango City Council.
