Weekly Events for Youths

Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m.: Youth Chess Club. Drop-in chess games in a friendly environment. Meet fellow enthusiasts, improve your game and enjoy friendly competition. For ages 9 and older. All skill levels are welcome.

Wednesdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Preschool Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities. Perfect for children ages 3 and older.

Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.: Teen Advisory Group. Want to make a fun space for you and your friends? Join the Teen Advisory Group. Help the library meet your needs and interests, gain valuable experience, meet new friends and hang out.

Thursdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Toddler Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities. Perfect for children ages 1-2.

Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: Teen Game Zone. Enjoy gaming in the library with a variety of games. Ages 12-17.

Fridays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Baby Time. Baby Time is tailored for babies from birth-12 months together with their favorite adult. Enjoy 15 to 20 minutes of early literacy activities followed by a playgroup. We sing songs, bounce to action rhymes and share stories, providing a rich environment for babies to hear language and interact with others.

Fridays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: Friday Fun. Friday afternoons are all about having fun building, playing, exploring and creating together. First Friday: STEM; second and fourth: LEGO; third: Art. If there’s a fifth Friday, we’ll let you know what it will be. Great for ages 5-12 and families.

Saturdays, 10-11 a.m.: English Conversation Circle. English-speaking practice for English learners of all levels. All languages and cultures welcome. Learn about your community, make new friends and share experiences.

Events by Date

March 4, 11-11:45 a.m.: Stories in the Park. Join Durango Parks and Recreation and Durango Public Library for a free, family friendly, outdoor storytime and nature journaling adventure. Recommended for ages 3-7 with a favorite adult. These programs will be held at Santa Rita Park picnic shelter at 111 South Camino del Rio. If the weather’s iffy, Stories in the Park might move indoors. In case of rain, snow, extreme cold/heat, etc., on the day of the event, call at 375-3380 to see if we'll be at our usual spot under the picnic shelter at Santa Rita Park or cozied up inside at an alternate location.

March 4, 6-7:30 p.m.: Book Club: “Crying in H Mart,” by Michelle Zauner. Register at the reference desk, then join us to discuss the book at the library. A free book is available for the first 15 people who register and attend. Planning ahead? Our April book will be “Death Comes for the Archbishop,” by Willa Cather (books available starting March 18). Preregistration required.

March 5, 5-7:30 p.m.: WRC Women’s History Month Reception. The Women’s Resource Center is celebrating local women with a monthlong portrait exhibit at the library. Join us for a reception on March 5 to take in the exhibit and gather with others to celebrate Women’s History Month and this year’s theme of “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”

March 5 and 19, 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey Poetry Workshop. Free poetry workshop – come write and create original works with us. All are welcome.

March 6 and 20, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation Hour. Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All language levels welcome.

March 7 and 8, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.: Friends of the Library Book Sale. Spring Book Sale. Books for all ages available.

March 8 and 22, 1-3:00 p.m.: Yarn Meetup. Calling knitters, crocheters and fiber artists of all ages and levels. Come work on your current project in an informal group setting.

March 11 and 25, 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m.: Great Decisions. Presented by the League of Women Voters of La Plata County, Great Decisions is an annual nonpartisan briefing book with accompanying discussion programs that cover eight foreign policy topics. (March 11: American Foreign Policy in the Middle East; March 25: NATO)

March 12, 6:15-7:45 p.m.: Writers & Scribblers Writing Group. A group for writers of all kinds to learn, practice and share the art and craft of writing. Main purpose is to try to help each other through the maze of things you must do as writers; from writing to editing and on to publishing and marketing your books, short stories, essays, or anything else. Discussion topics will vary and sometimes repeat depending upon the needs of the members at the time.

March 13, 4-5:30 p.m.: Craftenoons: Book Landscapes. Upcycle books by sculpting them into landscapes of your choice. You can build a mountain or desert terrain, or a charming fairy habitat. Fun for all skill and creativity levels, and all materials provided. For adults only.

March 18, 6-7:30 p.m.: Cook Book Club: Food 52 Genius Recipes. Cook a potluck of recipes from our chosen cookbook. How it works: 1. Register for the club. 2. Check out a copy of the cookbook from the reference desk. 3. Choose a recipe. 4. Email darcy.poletti@durangoco.gov to let her know what recipe you'll be making. 5. Cook the recipe for a group potluck at the library. Preregistration required.

March 24, 4-5:30 p.m.: Death Café. A group-directed discussion of death; it is not a grief support group. Objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. Facilitated by Lola Montano, local hospice nurse and trained death doula.

March 27, 6-7 p.m.: Human Factors of Avalanches. Join Friends of San Juans for a discussion about human factors associated with many avalanche accidents. This discussion is open to all backcountry enthusiasts, whether you have spent one day snowshoeing or thousands of days skiing in the backcountry. We will discuss avalanche basics, common human factors, read a case study and apply human factors to the accident.

Bayfield Student Art Show. Visit the library anytime through March for student art featuring works from the classroom of Kathleen Neal (Bayifled High School). We will host a reception on March 4 from 5-6 p.m. with an artists’ toast at 5:30 p.m.

Dancing Spirit Pottery Classes return to PRL. Dancing Spirit Center for the Arts returns this March with the first of a three class pottery series. The first is March 14 at 1:30 p.m. The classes give priority to veterans and their families, but community members are welcome as well.

Gamer Club (Grades 3-5): Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m. Board games, console video games, Roblox, Minecraft and more. Some computers are provided, but gamers can bring their own laptop or gaming devices if they prefer. This program is geared for grades 3 and older, but younger children are welcome to attend with a caregiver.

Mountaintop Movement Fitness Classes

Hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information.

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but use different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

Yoga For All

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. In this informal, free meetup, we create awareness and harmony between the mind and body that allows us to remove stress and anxiety. We use our breath to move deeper into our body while warming, lengthening and strengthening our muscles. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.

March 1, 1-3 p.m.: Pokemon Card Trading. Trade your Pokemon cards with other kids (ages 7-13).

March 3, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writer’s Group. No rules, just writing! Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

March 4, 11 a.m.-noon: Senior Planet: Digital Scrapbooking, Part 1. Learn about digital scrapbooking tools.

March 4, 5-6 p.m.: BHS Art Show Reception. Celebrate young artists at the Bayfield student art show reception, featuring works from the classroom of Kathleen Neal (BHS). Join us for an artists’ toast at 5:30 p.m.

March 6, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: First Thursday Yoga. Join Savannah to wiggle, stretch and unwind. This beginner-friendly Vinyasa Flow is aimed to relieve stress through gently flowing postures and linking movement to breath. All ages welcome. The class is free, but donations are always welcome.

March 7, 1:30 p.m.: First Friday Matinee. An afternoon film on the big screen at the library. March: “Hidden Figures,” rated PG.

March 10, 6-8 p.m.: Classic Movie Series with Dennis Taylor: “Stalag 17” (1953). Film enthusiast Dennis Taylor is back and is hosting a monthly series of classic movies. This film was based on a Broadway play, written by two former POWs who had experienced life in Stalag 17B in Austria. The play attracted the attention of director Billy Wilder. Wilder, who had fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s, co-wrote and produced the film adaptation. He cast William Holden in the lead. Holden won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

March 11, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center. Create two beautiful handmade cards. Free.

March 11, 6-7 p.m.: Cozy Craft Night: Metal Can Art. Start saving your clean soda or beer cans and learn how to turn them into charming potted plant decorations. This class is easy, fun and free. All ages are welcome, but younger participants will need some support.

March 12, 2-3:30 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club: “The Dictionary of Lost Words.” The library provides the books, the discussion leader and a place to meet each month. Stop by the front desk today to check out your copy of this month’s title: “The Dictionary of Lost Words,” by Pip Williams.

March 13, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Kaffeeklatsch! An hour of German conversation. Meet others who have ties to Deutschland, to the German language and want to practice their skills. Bis bald!

March 13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Learn Over Lunch: Speaker to be confirmed. Call or stop by the library to get more information soon and to sign up.

March 13, 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Community Music Makers. Local musicians of all abilities and instruments (including voice) are welcome. We share our songs and love of music of all kinds. Bring your instrument and a few copies of what you want to play and share. We usually go around the circle and each person shares a song with others joining in. Do not be intimidated; we truly are of all ability levels!

March 14, 1:30-3 p.m.: Dancing Spirit Art Class: Fairy Houses: Crafting Magical Miniatures. Unlock your imagination and bring a touch of magic to life by creating your very own fairy houses in this enchanting class, taught by Dancing Spirit Center for the Arts. Using handbuilding techniques such as slab construction and adding textures, you’ll design whimsical homes for fairies, gnomes and other magical beings. Whether you’re new to pottery or an experienced crafter, this class will inspire you to create charming miniature houses complete with tiny doors, windows and rooflines. Let your creativity run wild with decorative touches like natural elements and fun accessories. Space is limited to 12 participants, so call or stop by the library to reserve your spot early to craft your own magical masterpiece. Preference will be given to veterans and their families.

March 14 and 28, 4-5:30 p.m.: Beginning Mahjong Meetup. Mahjong is a tile-based table-top game developed in 19th century China. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is entertaining to play and, like dominoes, is relatively easy to learn. All are welcome.

March 14, 21 and 28, 6-11 p.m.: 4 Corners Tabletop Night. A place for tabletop gamers in the Four Corners to meet up and get their miniatures to the table. We play a variety of games and welcome players of all skill levels. We strongly encourage joining our Discord Server for event information, hobby inspiration and tabletop chat. March 15, 3-5 p.m.: “Elemental: Re-imagining Wildfire“ Film Screening. Can homes, communities, healthy forests and fire coexist? A growing number of scientists, safety experts and firefighters see a way forward. Their work has never been more urgent. We will screen the film, “Elemental: Re-imagining Wildfire,“ followed by a Q&A.

March 17 and 18, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: Babysitter Training. This two-day training course trains teens (12 to 18 years old) on basic child care, nutrition and an introductory understanding of early learning and social/emotional literacy skills. The course includes integrated 21st century Future Ready skills such as community leadership, business marketing, entrepreneurship and professionalism. The training also features a full-day basic lifesaving course including CPR/first aid training, allowing teens to receive official CPR/First Aid cards from the American Heart Association. All teens who participate in the class will become a part of the library’s babysitter referral list, which helps match local teens with Bayfield-area families looking for child care. Participants must commit to the full two-day course. If any spots remain open, alumni students can recertify their CPR/First Aid certifications. The course fee is $30 and must be paid before the day of the class. The cost for recertification is $20. Register by March 12. A minimum of 10 participants is needed for this class to run.

March 19, noon: Cookbook Club: St. Patrick’s Day. Each month, we meet and share a potluck of recipes from a chosen cookbook, chef or cuisine. Stop by the library and pick up a copy of that month’s cookbook and then call or email Joanna to RSVP and let the library know what recipe you’ll be making for the potluck (884-2222, ext. 517, joanna@prlibrary.org). In March, we will focus on a St. Patrick’s Day theme: Irish or green foods or be creative.

March 21, 10 a.m.-noon: All Abilities Art Class. The Arc of Southwest Colorado and Pine River Pressworks host a series of free art classes. Coach Jenn Hill will offer a peek inside various artforms, techniques and materials with a sprinkle of science and fun. These classes are open to community members of all abilities. March 21, 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Family Friday Matinee. A family film on the big screen at the library. This month: “The Garfield Movie,“ rated PG.

March 24, 5:30-7 p.m.: ’80s Trivia Night at Lost Goat Tavern. Get ready for a totally tubular night of nostalgia! Test your knowledge of iconic ’80s pop culture, groovy tunes, classic rides, true crime thrills and the books, movies and TV that defined a generation. It’s a funky fusion of trivia, fun and flashbacks.

March 25, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café. Pine River Library is one of many groups in 79 countries across the world that host Death Cafés. A Death Café is a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

March 27, 11 a.m.-noon: Spanish Conversation Hour. Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels are welcome.

March 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach. Books and DVDs available for check out, delivered to the Senior Center with an extended loan period (four weeks, rather than the standard one to three weeks).

March 31, 6-8 p.m.: Pine River Garden Club Meeting. Join us the last Monday of the month (January-October) in the library Community Room or outside in the garden, depending on the weather.

CreativiTEA: The first and third Tuesday of each month, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at Sunnyside Library. A meetup for crafty and creative people. Bring a portable hand craft you’re working on or need help with and tap into the community of crafters for inspiration.

Wee Read Toddler Storytime: Tuesdays at 11 a.m. at Sunnyside and at 2 p.m. at Fort Lewis Mesa. Stories, movement and songs for 2- to 4-year-olds and their caregivers.

Powerhouse Pass Program. Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa Libraries have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Check Out State Parks Program. Fort Lewis and Sunnyside libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Grief Support Group: Tuesday, March 4, at 3 p.m. Led by the compassionate Sara Barnes, LPC from Hospice of Mercy. This is not a group that demands a regular commitment; it’s a supportive space available whenever you need it most. Make Your Own Cucumber Sushi: Tuesday, March 11 at 4:30 p.m. Learn how to make your own type of sushi. No fish included. Something tasty and different with a fishless taste on sushi. All ages and everyone are welcome.

Canasta: Sunday, March 16 at 3:30 p.m. We will provide a variety of snacks, but feel free to bring your favorite snack to share with the group. This is a great opportunity to have fun, socialize and enjoy a friendly game of Canasta.

Everyday Uses of AI: Thursday, March 27 at 3 p.m. See how AI is part of everyday life. Hosted by Senior Planet and OATS from AARP.

Digital Scrapbooking Tools: Friday, March 28 at noon. Learn about digital scrapbooking tools. Hosted by Senior Planet and OATS from AARP.

Regular programs

Mondays at 10:30 a.m.: Ageless Grace. Aging gracefully through neuroplasticity and movement with ageless grace. The movements are done in a chair so that anyone can participate. All ages, body types and physical abilities will benefit from this fun class.

Mondays at 1:30 p.m.: Sewing Workshop. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’re invited to join us every Monday for some fun around sewing projects and crafts.

Tuesdays at 10 a.m.: Storytime. Storytime is on a new day. Stories, songs, crafts and more to encourage literacy in your young ones.

Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.: Open Art Studio. Work on your art projects, receive help and advice, and enjoy conversation and good times with other local artists. Guests and new members always welcome.

Wednesdays at noon: Electronics Hour. Tune up your skills or learn something new. Electronic-based projects and more.

Thursdays at 1 p.m.: Knitters Group. Join our lovely group of knitters for a beverage and a chat every Thursday in our Community Room.

Fridays at 9 a.m.: Community Coffee and Donuts. Opportunity to stay informed about all the resources available at the library.

Fridays at 1 p.m.: IDEA LAB Classes. New skills to learn with our highlighted classes of the month. Every Friday and Saturday join us to learn and experiment with Programing with Raspberry Pi.
