I am writing to encourage the Bayfield School District to include books that represent LGBTQ themes and other marginalized populations into free reading classroom libraries, at all schools at all levels.
I am extremely concerned about the controversies surrounding the district regarding its attitudes toward people who identify as LGBTQ. Our district’s vision states: “Each Student, Each Day, Wolverine Way.” My personal and professional beliefs and practices are in alignment with this inclusive vision as it stands for all students.
As a school counselor, my purpose is to promote the social, emotional and academic success of all students through advocacy, education, mentorship and support. I am committed to work toward eliminating barriers that impede the success of any demographic or marginalized population.
Before the social isolation brought about by the coronavirus, our youths were in a mental health crisis. It has only gotten worse since then. Marginalized populations, including LGBTQ, suffer greater risks than mainstream populations. Limiting representation exacerbates the situation. When students of any race, culture, ability or orientation suffer from a lack of representation they get the message “difference.” Extended periods of being identified as different gets interpreted as “unacceptable.” Feelings of isolation, alienation and separation follow, none of which supports the success of individuals of any age. No one is “unacceptable” due to how they identify.
The risks and consequences are far too great not to address the perceived lack of support of our LGBTQ students.
