Your vote in the upcoming LPEA election matters. The future trajectory of our electrical co-op rides on two possible directions – continuing with business as usual or new visionary leadership to increase our local resiliency with renewable energy.
I’ve heard a quote that says one’s greatest strength can also be his greatest weakness. Davin Montoya has on the LPEA board District 2 (Bayfield, Hesperus and Ignacio) for 26 years. His strength is familiarity with the system. His weakness is old-school policy that he is already familiar with. He’s an old dog who has not learned a new trick: how to listen to LPEA co-op members (us) requesting clean energy and implement more local renewables.
His direction has led us into purchasing wholesale electricity from Tri-State, one of the top five dirtiest suppliers in the nation. The energy sector is moving rapidly toward low cost renewable energy while we stagnate by continuing to give Tri State over $70 million a year for pollution emitting coal power.
Kim Martin is also running for District 2 and has extensive experience in the fields of education, law, and community service. She has served on the board of directors for Fort Lewis College Foundation, Durango 9-R School District, and several other management and advisory roles for nonprofits and the private sector. She knows how to work inside and outside the box in tackling tough issues.
If elected to LPEA, Kim will use her experience to ensure financial responsibility. Kim is committed to bringing efficient, economical and local clean energy opportunities to LPEA customers.
It is no secret, or surprise, to state that the electrical utility industry is now facing some significant changes to their traditional business model with distributed generation, batteries, electric cars, and wind generation advances. Kim can lead LPEA in our new energy future.
The LPEA ballot will arrive with your electric bill after April 21st. Vote for Kim Martin and return before May 1.
