Marxmanship: bespectacled sophomore sparks BHS

Wolverine defense nearly denies Cortez win

Goliath may have bettered David and Co. in the end.

But Bayfield's manifestation of the biblical stone slinger left the field larger than ever and with a drive he'll replicate every time he suits up.

Because Dave Foster, BHS soccer coach and commanding general, won't accept anything less.

Weighing in at...well, he does weigh, and standing...um....definitely not eye-to-eye with Montezuma Cortez's 6'1", 185-pound Andrew Laymon, is Bayfield sophomore defender Shea Marx.

The diminunitive sophomore shocked the visiting Montezume-Cortez team on Sept. 4 with a 52nd-second penalty kick to offset Laymon's initial goal in the fourth minute of the game.

During suspension of the game called for lightning, Shea seemed to recharge and rechannel into the BHS back line for an incredible home opener for the BHS soccer boys.

The Wolverines made several close shots before the lighting delay via Tilden Berriman's potent left foot. Then Alex Knight made a shot over a Panther's back shoulder, and the Wolverines were ahead 2-1.

Cortez made another goal in the 78th minute, tying the game 2-2. Marx led an inspired charge into overtime, and sophomore goalie Chad Winkler made a specatular save to prevent a third Cortez goal. But in the end, Cortez junior Manual Martinez rocketed in goal in the 98th minute for a 3-2 win.

Bayfield currently stands 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Southwest League play. They host Telluride at 11 a.m. Saturday for more league action.
