More than 75 cross-country skiers showed up to compete in the 4Corners Riversports Red Hot Relay on Saturday at the Durango Nordic Center.

The relay featured teams of three racers, with each skier completing one 3K lap. Many also wore costumes, adding festivity to the event.

The Masters at Heart, however, were the fastest team on Saturday and skied their way to a first-place finish. We’re Kind of a Big Dill finished second, followed by Gnarly Guardians, SWATT and the Three Blind Mice in fifth place out of 26 teams.

The Nordic center was also scheduled to hold another race this Saturday, the McDonald’s Winter Triathlon, featuring a ski, fat bike and snowshoe leg. On Wednesday, however, the race was called off.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the McDonald’s Winter Triathlon this year,” the Nordic center posted on its website Wednesday. “However, if you are in the mood to race, check out the Silverton Whiteout, which is taking place on Saturday!”

The whiteout is a 10-hour fat bike race that is open to skiers, snowshoers and really anything nonmotorized. It will take 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Silverton.

The biggest race on the Durango Nordic Center’s calendar is the Pine Needle Langlauf Nordic Ski Race, which is part of the Southwest Nordic Race Series. It is scheduled for Feb. 26.
