Fort Lewis College is adding a historic moment to its more than one century of existence May 2 when it confers graduate degrees for the first time.

Twenty-four students who navigated two years of post-undergraduate study will receive the Master of Arts in Education, teacher leadership option. The program was created in 2012.

The ground breakers will receive their sheepskin at the second of two commencement ceremonies at which the keynote speaker will be U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo. Bennet will speak at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. ceremonies in Whalen Gymnasium.

Twenty-five students enrolled in the master’s program, campus spokesman Mitch Davis said.

Another two-year master’s program with the leadership option will start in the fall, Davis said. In all likelihood, it will have a slightly smaller number of students, he said.

In the planning stage, he said, is a Master of Arts in Education: Secondary Education K-12 Teacher Licensure Option. The target date is 2017.

A master’s program in a field other than education is very likely, Davis said.

“The college is looking,” Davis said. “But it’s too far out to say in what field it will be.”

The choice of a master’s degree in education resulted in feedback from the community and from educators, Davis said. The teacher leadership option was logical because teachers today are being asked to do more than teach, Davis said. They are being asked to evaluate one another and do administrative tasks.

In excess of 450 students will receive degrees May 2. Both ceremonies will be streamed on YouTube. The videos can be found on the FLC YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/flcdurango.
