May highlights

May 5-19: 14th Annual Durango Public Library Literary Festival. Events will include book clubs, writing workshops and even a cooking demo. The festival will feature regional and national authors, including Caldecott Medal winner Andrea L. Rogers, cookbook author Alana Yazzie, and local poet and writer Lisa C. Taylor. Signings and book sales will be offered at Rogers’ and Yazzie’s events in partnership with Maria’s Bookshop. All events will be held at the library and are free and open to the public. Multiple events require pre-registration: “How to Publish a Children’s Book,” “Intro to Nature Journaling,” Yazzie’s cooking demo, Roger’s writing workshop and both book clubs. Festival made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Durango Public Library.

Weekly events for youths

Mondays, 2-4:30 p.m.: Lego Club. For ages 5-12. No registration required. May 25: Canceled (Library is closed).

Tuesdays, 3:30-5 p.m.: Tuesday Try It. Themes will vary, but may include games, out of the ordinary art forms, cultural experiences, movement, cooking, writing challenges and book-centric activities. Ages 9-12. May 26: Canceled.

Wednesdays, 11-11:30 a.m.: Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other activities. For children ages 3+.

Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.: Teen Advisory Group. For teens 13-17 to share their ideas and help shape library events. You could even earn required school community service hours. May 27: Canceled.

Thursdays, 11-11:45 a.m.: Toddler Time. Stories, songs, rhymes and other activities! For children ages 1-2.

Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: Teen Game Zone. Ages 12-17.

Fridays, 11-11:45 a.m.: Baby Time. For babies birth-12 months with an adult. Sing songs, bounce to action rhymes and share stories, providing a rich environment for babies to hear language and interact with others.

Fridays, 3:3- 4:30 p.m.: Friday Fun. Each week alternates between art-focused activities and STEM challenges. For ages 5-12 and families.

May 5: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.: Great Decisions: U.S.-China Relations in the New Trump Era. Eight-week program produced by the Foreign Policy Association. Local discussion series co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of La Plata County, the Durango Branch of the American Association of University Women and the Durango Public Library. Each session begins with video and brief lecture, followed by 90-minute discussion led by volunteer facilitators from our community. All discussions free and open to the public. May 13: 6:15-7:45 p.m.: Writers & Scribblers. Special Lit Fest writing workshop. A group for writers of all kinds to learn, practice and share the art and craft of writing.

May 14: 6-8 p.m.: To Disturb and Delight: Building the Speculative World: A writing workshop with Caldecott Winning Author Andrea L. Rogers. We can talk about things that have bothered us in a genre we enjoy, how the political shows up in choices characters make, and what kind of hard questions we have to answer in creating and revising a world. We’ll also have fun doing some writing.

May 16: 10-10:45 a.m.: Stories in the Park. Storytime and a nature-themed craft. Recommended for ages 3-7 with an adult.

May 16: 1-2:30 p.m.: Acoustic Jam. Bring your voice and/or an instrument. Share the songs you know and learn new ones. Everyone is welcome.

May 16: 1-3 p.m.: Silent Book Club. An hour of dedicated reading. Bring your own book or grab something new off the shelf.

May 16: 3-4:30 p.m.: Page One Writing Contest Reception. Special reception celebrating participants that will include readings by the winners of the contest.

May 19: 6-7:30 p.m.: Cookbook Club: “The Modern Navajo Kitchen.” Get together and cook a potluck of recipes from “The Modern Navajo Kitchen: Homestyle Recipes that Celebrate the Flavors and Traditions of the Diné,” by Alana Yazzie, one of our Lit Fest authors. Pre-registration required.

May 20: 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey at The Hive. Write and create original works at the Hive (1175 Camino del Rio) for a community brainstorm and poetry-writing session. All are welcome.

May 26: 4-5:30 p.m.: Death Café. Gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. Objective is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.

May 27: 4:30-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Practical Ways to Protect Your Home From Wildlife. With Alex Graf, Wildfire Adapted Partnership Western La Plata County coordinator. Presentation will display home hardening and defensible space principles residents of La Plata County need to know to be prepared for wildfire season.

May 21, 6-7 p.m.: Living Room Conversations: Immigration. Immigration is one of the most complex and deeply personal issues of our time, intertwining questions of identity, opportunity and belonging. This conversation provides a chance to move beyond political debates and media headlines, creating space for thoughtful dialogue about the impact of immigration on our lives and communities. Join us by the fireplace.

Hopper’s Storytime, Thursdays, 11 a.m. Read books and make a craft.

Children

STEAM Power Hour (Grades 3-5): Mondays, 4-5 p.m.; Junior STEAM Power Hour (Grades K-2): Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m. Delve into the wonders of learning science and create artistic masterpieces.

Kids’ Gamer Club (Grades 3-5): Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m. Board games, console video games, Roblox, Minecraft and more. Some computers are provided, but gamers can bring their own laptop or gaming devices. Geared for grades 3 and older, but younger children welcome with a caregiver.

Teens (Grades 6-12)

Teen Time, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 4-5:30 p.m. Cards, tabletop games and more. Space to play, read, work on homework and chill.

Teen TGIT, Thursdays, 4-5:30 p.m. Games (Xbox, Oculus, Roblox, etc.), activities, music and snacks. On the third Thursday of each month, watch for something special.

Teen D&D: Fridays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. New members welcome, no experience necessary, but you will need to set up a character before you can join the ongoing campaign. Email sera@prlibrary.org to schedule a time for that.

Weekly programs for all ages

Crafternoon, Fridays, 1-2 p.m. Create craft projects such as pony bead buddies, quilling designs, jewelry making, crochet and more. Drop in activity open to all ages. Caregivers encouraged to participate alongside children.

Traditional Chen Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), Sundays, 3-4 p.m. and Wednesdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. Explore the benefits of Chen Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) with instructor Jason Brown. Classes are free, but donations always welcome.

Mountaintop Movement Full Body Fit Classes, Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels welcome. Classes are free, although donations are welcome. Weather permitting, classes may be held outside.

Yoga for All, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m. You’ll need a yoga mat and water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.

Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale, Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. Weather permitting, stop by the shed in the library parking lot for weekly popup book sale.

May 4, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writers’ Group. A member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. To read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

May 16, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Pine River Garden Club Annual Plant Exchange. Bring a plant, take a plant or make a donation and take a plant. Only cash payments will be accepted. Reminder: the deadline to order PRGC shirts is at the exchange.

May 16, 2-4 p.m.: Japanese Tea. Learn about the history of tea ceremony, as well as its philosophy and wellness qualities. Participants will watch a ceremony, learn how to make matcha tea properly and enjoy a Japanese sweet with matcha. Registration required, and space is limited. May 20, noon-1 p.m.: Cookbook Club: Tapas. Each month, we gather and share a potluck of recipes from a chosen cookbook, chef or cuisine.
