Wolverines’ playoff aspirations get a 5-point boost in Alamosa
Wolverines’ playoff aspirations get a 5-point boost in Alamosa

The playoff dream still is alive for the Bayfield High School football team.

BHS beat Alamosa 27-22 on Friday in Alamosa to remain in the hunt.

“With the exception of the first drive of the game, from that point on we ran the ball well, and they had a hard time slowing us down,” BHS assistant coach Todd McMenimen said.

Colter McMenimen scored on a 36-yard touchdown run for the Wolverines with 1 minute, 27 seconds left to put BHS up 27-16.

He also scored on the ground in the first half.

Alamosa (2-6, 1-3 Western Slope South League) drove down the field with the ensuing kickoff, and quarterback Marco Garcia threw a touchdown pass with 22.1 seconds left to cut the Mean Moose deficit to 27-22.

The Mean Moose failed the two-point conversion, and BHS (4-4, 2-2 WSL) recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

The Wolverines trailed 10-7 at the start of the third quarter, but Brody McGhehey gave them the lead with a 29-yard touchdown run with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

“The kids kind of came together and came back as a unit, which the last couple weeks we kind of struggled with,” coach McMenimen said. “Even when things were going against us, they kept their heads in the game and kept battling through.”

Alamosa retook the lead with 11:10 remaining in the game, but Colter McMenimen returned the kickoff to the Mean Moose 37.

BHS quarterback Kelton McCoy plunged in from two yards out with 9:25 left in the game to put BHS up 20-16.

The Wolverines have one more game remaining in the regular season: They will host Pagosa Springs at 6 p.m. Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

“We know we’ve got to take care of business. If the seniors want to play more than one more game, we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing and get the job done,” coach McMenimen said. “It’s not all in our hands, but if we take care of business, we’ll be sitting pretty.”
