Two out of five Wolverines wrestling at regionals Friday in Colorado Springs will compete for regional championships Saturday afternoon.
Colter McMenimen and Ryan Nava both advanced through Friday’s quarterfinals to reach the semifinal round.
“Both looked pretty good,” Bayfield High School wrestling head coach Todd McMenimen said.
McMenimen received a first-round bye at 138 pounds, then beat Hayden Humberg of Dolores Huerta by technical fall in the quarterfinals.
Nava received a first-round bye at 120 pounds, then beat Dalton Quintana of Monte Vista by technical fall in the quarterfinals.
Cash Snooks lost his quarterfinal to Kyler Lobato of Monte Vista at 145 pounds by technical fall.
“We knew Cash was going to have trouble giving up some weight,” coach McMenimen said.
Cody Speece lost his quarterfinal to Jose Duran of Monte Vista at 113 pounds by technical fall.
Taylor Winch lost his quarterfinal to Jared Mestas of Dolores Huerta at 132 pounds by technical fall, then bounced back to win his consolation round match by technical fall over Trystin Bunguard of Florence.
“Winch, he and Cody Speece had some tough matches,” coach McMenimen said. “Both had to wrestle the No. 1 seeds.”
Winch’s final place is to be determined, but McMenimen and Nava both can book their trips to the CHSAA Class 3A Wrestling State Championships next weekend in Denver with semifinal victories.
“We’ve got some pretty good matches in the morning,” coach McMenimen said.
